So you have worked very hard over the years for good solid search engine rankings and you are getting ready to launch a new website but you or your developer have not done 301 redirects.

STOP THE LAUNCH!

What is a 301 redirect you say?

Well if you have made changes to your website or are launching a new website and the page URLs have changed, for example:

lachancedesign.com/search-engine-optimization/

and it has changed to:

lachancedesign.com/search-engine-optimization-SEO/

You will need to do a 301 redirect. The redirect serves a number of purposes including automatically taking site visitors who may have bookmarked the old link or clicked on a Google search result link over to the new page. This redirect also tells Google that this content has moved and Google will automatically update the link on their search results. This will also preserve your page ranks in search results.

Without a 301 redirect the site visitor will get a 404 error page and Google will eventually depopulate that link from their directory. Once that link is gone getting it back may be difficult at best.

The image below shows what can happen when a new website has been launched with no regard for old URLs and 301 redirects. This is a website we worked on for a number of years with an average keyword placement that put most targeted search terms at the top of page one. All of that organic placement was lost within 2 weeks when another developer launched a new site for this client.

The web developer did not document old URLs and did not implement 301 redirects for them. Within two weeks of the new site launch, the site’s SERP ranks dropped dramatically with most old URLs being de-indexed (removed from Google search results). Organic traffic dropped over 80%.  Along with that their organic search traffic flatlined (see image below from Webmaster Tools).

So if you are talking to a web developer about a new website and they do not bring up 301 redirects you may want to ask them about it.

#1 – Is your website “Mobile-Friendly”?

Approximately 30-40% of your site visitors are viewing your website using a mobile device. A mobile-friendly website – also known as “responsive” – is a website that reconfigures itself to the device is it being viewed on. In April of 2015, Google launched what is referred to as “Mobilegeddon”. Google’s new mobile search algorithm now prioritizes mobile-friendly sites over those that are not mobile-friendly. Unfortunately, sites that are not mobile-friendly are being pushed back into the search rankings behind those that are mobile-friendly.

A mobile-friendly site also improves the site visitors’ experience making it easier to read and navigate. In December of 2015, we relaunched FireStormGraphix.com on a new mobile-friendly platform. The website saw its online sales double upon launch.

#2 – Is your website showing up in the search?

As mentioned above, a mobile-friendly site will go a long way to improving your search engine presence. However, a properly coded and structured website geared to your target keywords is a crucial part of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). A newer SEO centric website with improved code that abides by Google standards will make a substantial improvement in your search visibility. The above mentioned FireStormGraphix.com also saw over a 100% increase is search visibility through Google.

#3 – Are you getting inquiries/referrals through your website?

A tell-tale sign that your website interface may not be as effective as it can be is little or no inquiries or low conversion rates. There are new standards in web design that are geared to increasing the number of website contacts for both desktop and mobile applications.

#4 – Is your website design easy to use and navigate?

Today’s graphical user interface standards are dramatically different than they were just 5 years ago. More engaging design combined with ease of use results in more time spent on your site – leading to higher contact and conversion rates.
